The display of an Eskimo mummy in a kayak at an exhibition in Rotterdam (Holland) has stirred up some controversy during the last months of 1998.

A pressure group called "Arctic Peoples Alert" has called for the burial of the remains in Greenland. Their claim is supported by Jonathan Motzfeld, Greenland's prime minister.

The remains were probably found near Greenland by Dutch whalers, some 200 years ago. The mummy has been in the collection of the Westfries Museum in Hoorn for more than 100 years.

Director R. Spruit from the Westfries Museum has no intention of returning the mummy.

The picture above shows a clipping from the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad of 6 November 1998. The headline says: "Do not display Eskimo mummy".
