Svartisen

Covering 370 km², Svartisen is the second largest glacier of Norway. Local tourist agencies like to put this in a slightly different way, for instance calling Svartisen "the largest glacier in Northern Scandinavia" or "the second largest glacier of the European Continent". It is situated on the Arctic Circle in the Saltfjell-Svartisen National Park.

The picture shows Østerdalsisen, the most famous of Svartisen's 60 tongues. We camped on the borders of the ice-green lake of Svartisvatn, listening to the eerie detonation-like sounds of the ice.
